Entertainment Spotlight: Great Wall Youth Orchestra

Great Wall Youth Orchestra will be appearing at the StreetFest Cultural Stage on Saturday August 25th at 2:15PM

The Great Wall Orchestra is a Chinese youth orchestra created by the Purple Silk Music Foundation, an Oakland-based nonprofit that provides a music education program for inner-city youth. Student members range from elementary to high school age and play pieces that reflect their high level of skill in playing their chosen Chinese musical instruments.

Many of the students are recent immigrants or first-generation Americans, and the orchestra offers a special connection between their origins and heritage and their life in the United States. Great Wall performs at many local venues throughout the year. Increasingly, they are invited to perform outside of the San Francisco Bay Area, even abroad.
